The Latest News from VIGH

This week, VIGH hosted visitors from Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to attend the VIGH Transdisciplinary Program for Strengthening Clinical Trial Regulation Capacity. The goal of this program was to build capacity of NAFDAC and NACA staff for clinical trial regulation and oversight of clinical trial protocols. NAFDAC, Nigeria's local equivalent of the U.S.

This year, seven students graduated with a Master of Public Health in Global Health, and 11 received the Graduate Certificate in Global Health. The week leading up to Friday's commencement ceremony involved several events celebrating this year's Global Health graduates, including a dinner and graduation reception. MPH graduates received their diplomas during the commencement ceremony on May 11 in Langford Auditorium.

On Monday, February 19, 2018, Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., a leading voice on global health equity, social justice and a humanitarian spent the day at Vanderbilt lecturing and meeting with faculty, staff and students.

 
 
 
 
  

Vanderbilt Master of Public Health (MPH) students presented their practicum experiences at the 2018 Public Health Practicum Colloquium on January 26. Through posters and discussion, students presented their practicum experiences working and learning in public health organizations and settings. Global health scientists from around the world who attended the 2017 annual meeting of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health display wristbands to show solidarity in support of [or show gratitude for support from] the NIH Fogarty International Center. Since 2012, the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) has directed one of five Fogarty Global Health Fellows training consortia, and from 2007 to 2012, VIGH administered the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program worldwide.


 
 In February, the VIGH Student Advisory Council hosted its seventh annual university-wide global health case competition. This year, the competition was held in conjunction with Vanderbilt’s first “Haiti Week,” co-hosted by VIGH and the Vanderbilt Center for Latin American Studies.

To raise awareness of university opportunities to engage with Africa, Vanderbilt will host its first-ever Africa Week April 2-7.

 Vanderbilt faculty from across campus will have a strong presence at the 2016 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI). In the 2016 Global Health Case Competition, teams proposed solutions to strengthen the health system in Liberia after the Ebola outbreak. The Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health’s Student Advisory Council hosted its sixth annual Global Health Case Competition from February 7-13, 2016. This year, the Student Advisory Council organized several experts from the field to give presentations on health systems strengthening (HSS) and act as judges for the competition.
