Dr. Musselwhite will spend her fellowship year at Barretos Cancer Hospital in Brazil under the mentorship of Nelson Chao, Adhemar Longhatto-Filho, and José Humberto Fregnani. Her research will establish a prospective cohort of women with abnormal results following cervical cancer screening and will seek to investigate biological and clinical differences in HPV infection and cervical cancer risk by self-reported race and the use of ancestry informative markers. Dr. Musselwhite will also establish a tissue biorepository for future use by local collaborators. Her work is also supported by a Duke Global Cancer Pilot Grant.
Prior to completing an internal medicine residency at Duke University, Dr. Musselwhite completed a fellowship in the intramural NIH Clinical Research Training Program (currently the Medical Research Scholars Program). She has previously conducted research and clinical work in Haiti, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Dr. Musselwhite received her MD from Duke University and MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She will begin Oncology fellowship at Duke University following her Fogarty fellowship and will continue her research in partnership with Barretos Cancer Hospital. Her work has been featured in scientific journals as well as the popular press including the New York Times, Forbes Magazine, and the Huffington Post.
