Joseph Licht, DO, MS

U.S. Fellow

Home Institution: Emory University
Fellowship Site: Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Research Topic: Understanding the chronic sequelae of trachoma in Ethiopia

Dr. Licht will spend his fellowship year at Addis Ababa University in Addis Ababa under the mentorship of Meseret Ejigu, MD, Wondu Alemayehu, MD, MPH,  Soroosh Behshad, MD, MPH and Hee Joon Kim, MD. His Fogarty research will explore the uninvestigated sequelae of trachoma--a blinding eye condition--in Ethiopia, a nation where this disease bur-den still remains high.

Dr. Licht is an ophthalmologist with an early and ongoing interest in global health. His aspirations began at the University of Florida, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa while earning a BA in linguistics, and then an MS in environmental engineering sciences. After a brief period teaching high school mathematics, he decided on a path in medicine. He matriculated at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, earned his DO, and subsequently completed his ophthalmology training at Larkin Community Hospital and the Bay Pines Veterans Administration. Captivated by lengthy academic and medical trips to Nigeria and Nicaragua, respectively, his exposure to the extremes of poverty and untreated disease only affirmed his conviction to make lasting contributions in communities of great need.

A Florida native, he ultimately plans to divide his time between treating patients in his local community and engaging in academic, innovative, and clinical global health endeavors abroad.
