Fellowship Project: Drug Resistance and Genetic Diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from North-western Tanzania
Dr Benson Kidenya, is combining his interest in molecular biology and epidemiology by studying the molecular epidemiology of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in East Africa. His long term goal is to become a senior faculty member at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences-(CUHAS) at Weill-Bugando and conduct research on tuberculosis and mentor medical students, residents, and junior faculty. A Fogarty Fellowship will give him the mentored research experience to pursue his PhD thesis research and strengthen his mentorship skills to help him achieve his career goals in research and training. He is a Lecturer of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His research interest is on the molecular epidemiology of drug resistant tuberculosis in Western Tanzania. He received a MS in Molecular Biology Makerere University and a MS in Clinical Epidemiology from Weill Cornell. His MS research at Weill Cornell was on assessment of a rapid diagnostic test for pulmonary tuberculosis.
