Since 2006, Dr. Tomita has been involved in mental health research in sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and South Africa. He received the NIH National Research Service Pre-doctoral Award (PI: Tomita) to train in social epidemiology methods, focusing on psychosocial interventions to reduce psychiatric re-hospitalization among homeless individuals with severe mental illness. Dr. Tomita earned Ph.D. in social work from Columbia University. His career goal is to become an independent global mental health and services researcher to improve the quality of lives of individuals with mental illness and their family in the community.
