Research Topic: Integrating mental health into an HIV clinic to improve outcomes among Tanzanian youth

Mr. Acosta will spend his fellowship year at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi under the mentorship of Dorothy Dow, MD, MSc, Blandina Mmbaga, MD, PhD and Elizabeth Krebs, MD, MSc. His research will focus on integrating mental health into an HIV clinic to improve outcomes among Tanzanian youth.
Mr. Acosta is a third year medical student at Thomas Jefferson University. After graduating from Indiana University with a BS in Biology and a minor in Swahili, he moved to Philadelphia to pursue his MD. He is considering residency in either internal medicine or psychiatry, ultimately with the intention of integrating global clinical research and health care capacity building into his career.

His interest in working in Tanzania and East Africa came after spending a year in Zanzibar learning Swahili and working with their Ministry of Health in an effort to promote health literacy of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
