Center Hosts Symposium on Gut Dysbiosis

As a part of the META HIV CVD Project Program Grant, our team hosted a symposium at the Research Society of Alcoholism annual meeting. The symposium was titled Alcohol, Gut Dysbiosis, Inflammation, and non-AIDS Diseases among People with HIV. Presenters of the symposium were Drs. Kendall Bryant, Matt Freiberg, Shirish Barve, Smita Ghare, Kaku So-Armah, Samuel Mensah, Natalie Chichetto, Vaughn Bryant, and Curtis Gabriel.

Team Member Spotlight: Mike Lann

Mike Lann Mike, a programmer on the team, answers some hard-hitting questions for us to get to know him better. Describe your role here at Team V-CREATE. I have been working as a programmer for the team for over 4 years.  I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I work primarily with SAS, SQL Server, and Python to produce datasets or software tools for the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) and affiliated cohorts.

I am a programmer based out of Colorado*, supporting V-CREATE research by producing analytic datasets from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) and affiliated cohorts.

V-CREATE published in Circulation

Work by Dr. Freiberg and Dr. Beckman was recently published in Circulation, the Journal of the American Heart Association. The work shows that independent of traditional risk factors, the presence of microvascular disease increases the risk of amputation alone and synergistically increases risk in patients with peripheral artery disease.The full article can be found here. 

Sudden Cardiac Death and HIV at CROI

Dr. Freiberg presented "Sudden Cardiac Death Among HIV-Infected and -Uninfected Veterans” on behalf of V-CREATE team members at this year's Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. The authors of this project are Matthew S. Freiberg, Meredith S. Duncan, Suman Kundu, Asri Mumpuni, Emily Epstein, Annie Bedigian, Amy C Justice, Eric Vittinghoff, and Zian Tseng.
