Nashville VACS Site Up & Running

The Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Nashville is the newest site of the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS). The Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) is a prospective, observational cohort study of HIV- positive and an age/race/site matched control group of HIV- negative veterans in care in the United States.

MDD and Heart Failure Work Published in Circulation and Featured in Research News @ Vanderbilt

A recent study was published in Circulation by Dr. Freiberg's team that highlights the role of HIV and depression in cardiovascular outcomes. This study was the first to conclude that major depressive disorder (MDD) is an independent risk factor for heart failure in adults with HIV. Prior to this study, background research found that depression was a common comorbidity, but previous studies did not look at MDD as an independent risk factor.

VACS Visits Nashville

Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS)  investigators and study personnel from Yale University, Boston University Medical Center, and the University of Pittsburgh visited Vanderbilt June 29 through July 1 2015 for collaborative meetings and discussions about projects and grants related to the VACS Cardiovascular Disease Core. Investigators and personnel met with a variety of Vanderbilt's faculty, including Radiology, Biostatistics, Cardiac Rehab, and Infectious Disease, to discuss future plans and possibilities in efforts to further research efforts.
