V-BRCH Facilitates Qualitative Methods Workshop at Partner-Site in Nigeria ridingkm Wed, 11/30/2022 - 12:50 RSS:

For the past two years, the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Building Research Capacity in HIV and Non-communicable Diseases (V-BRCH) program has been conducting mentoring and skills acquisitions training for Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) physicians and faculty focused on clinical trials in HIV-associated non-communicable diseases. This capacity-building initiative has been done via short- and medium-term learning opportunities, mentoring arrangements, pairing and mentored research projects. On October 31, 2022, a total of 25 AKTH physicians and faculty members gathered for a 5-day intensive workshop on Qualitative Methods.

The Qualitative Methods workshop was facilitated by Dr. Leslie Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine, Emory University. Dr. Faisal Dankishiya, AKTH Research Manager and Qualitative Lead, co-facilitated the workshop.

Dr. Muktar Aliyu, V-BRCH PI and Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health, along with AKTH faculty members, Professor Mahmoud Sani, VBRCH multiple PI, and Dr. Baba Musa, and Dr. Fatima Tsiga-Ahmed (VBRCH investigators) welcomed all participants and participated in the training.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the skills and competencies of participants to further their understanding of the use of qualitative research, question development, data collection methods, essential functions of qualitative data management, and analysis software.

The workshop was declared open by Dr. Auwal Gajida, Chairman of the AKTH Medical Advisory Committee, who stated, “Being a quantitative method student, I wish I had time to participate in this training.” Certificates were distributed to all participants at the end of the workshop.

In October physician scientists interested in Implementation Science (IS) at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital/ Bayero University in Nigeria gathered together for a workshop to learn more about IS concepts, strategies, and design principles.

This capacity building workshop and training activity was sponsored by the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Building Research Capacity in HIV and Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) training program (V-BRCH) and the AKTH-BUK-Vanderbilt: Developing Future Leaders in Child Neurology and Epilepsy Research program (ABV) Program.

V-BRCH Program Kicks-Off with Mentoring and Leadership Workshop in Nigeria ridingkm Mon, 01/04/2021 - 16:58 RSS:

Building upon the longstanding collaboration between Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH), the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Building Research Capacity in HIV and Non-communicable Diseases (V-BRCH) Program develops and strengthens scientific leadership and expertise needed to conduct clinical trials research in Nigeria.

Vital components of the program include on-site workshops, paired mentoring arrangements, and mentored research projects.

In November 2019, V-BRCH hosted a leadership and mentorship training workshop at AKTH in Kano, Nigeria. More than 30 health practitioners and researchers gathered to learn about the purpose and value of mentoring relationships from public health leaders, become strong mentors, and develop effective and successful mentoring relationships. Topics included mentoring opportunities and challenges, team building, and constructive feedback, as well as a Leadership in Action case series.
