Arie L. Nettles, Ph.D., is professor of clinical pediatrics and a psychologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She works with patients ranging from school-age children to young adults who have developmental disabilities, autism and cleft and craniofacial disorders.

In 2011, Dr. Nettles founded the VUMC Office of Inclusion and Health Equity (OIHE) at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. In 2018, she expanded the program’s reach to include education and training efforts for the entire medical center clinical workforce. Educational programs center on cultural sensitivity and awareness, unconscious bias and the Respect @ Work ongoing series that focuses on sexual harassment and civil workplace behaviors.

Prior to joining VUMC, Dr. Nettles held joint appointments at the University of Michigan Schools of Education and Medicine as assistant professor/assistant research scientist and clinical assistant professor, respectively. Prior to that, she was an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling. Additional faculty appointments include Tennessee State University, Fisk University and Trenton State College. She has served as the Salzburg Global Faculty Fellow on health and education.

Dr. Nettles is a licensed psychologist in Tennessee and Michigan, a nationally certified school psychologist, and a nationally registered health service provider. She is a member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and the Academy of Academic Excellence, in addition to several other professional organizations. Notable awards include the American Psychological Association Minority Fellow, Tennessee Hospital Association Diversity Champion, 5-Star Excellence Award for Provider Services and CABLE’s Individual Power of Inclusion. Appointed by governors former and current, Dr. Nettles chairs the Tennessee Statewide Planning and Policy Council for the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Her current research focuses on best practices for inclusion and equity in healthcare.
