Application Diagnostics and Monitoring

Overview

Our team can provide application performance management solutions for your department including monitoring and analytics capabilities for Java and .Net applications. We can provide real-time, end-to-end management of your applications and assist your department with application mapping, dynamic base-lining, and code-level diagnostics.

We can also provide relevant information to quickly resolve issues, make user experience improvements, and assure that applications meet performance expectations.

How can I get it?

To request diagnostics and monitoring for your application, complete a Pegasus Ticket request for an Application Platform Services (APS) request.  If available licenses exist, the agent can be installed.

You can also receive Controller access by completing a Pegasus Ticket for an Application Platform Services System Access request.  If no licenses are available, it may require the purchase of additional licenses.  Servers not managed by our team may require your departmental IT personnel to perform the agent installation.

  • If requested, VUMC IT can configure alerts to automatically generate Pegasus incidents and report them to you.

The Pegasus Configuration Item (CI) for creating AppDynamics related incidents is “APPDYNAMICS.”

Access to the AppDynamics web console is granted by adding a user’s VUMC ID to the appropriate groups and roles in the Controller’s administration interface.

AppDynamics can be configured to send email alerts in response to application monitoring issues detected in business transactions, memory, data sources, hardware, messaging, etc. This functionality is configured in the Alert and Respond section of the Controller.

  • The process to install AppDynamics agents includes:

    • Validate that a license is available and purchase additional licenses if applicable
    • Identify the application and machines for installing the application agent and machine agent
    • Install and configure the AppDynamics Application agent
    • Restart the application
    • Install and configure the AppDynamics machine agent
    • Start the machine agent
    • Verify the application and machine agents are reporting to the AppDynamics controller successfully
    • Create application groups and roles in the controller for the application
