About OHE

In 2016, Vanderbilt was selected by the Association of American Medical Colleges as 1 of 8 institutions in its multi-year project, "Building a Systems Approach to Community Health and Health Equity for Academic Medical Centers." This project accelerated the creation of a medical center-wide Office of Health Equity (OHE) in 2019. The OHE's focus was to expand health equity programs across the VUMC enterprise and support health equity initiatives in the community.

Overarching Mission

The overarching mission of OHE is to drive a systems approach to health equity initiatives across VUMC. By collaborating across the research, education and clinical arms of VUMC and engaging community partners, OHE supports existing initiatives and develops innovative models to improve health outcomes for historically marginalized and minoritized groups in Nashville, surrounding counties and beyond.

To ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to achieve and maintain optimal health, the OHE seeks to better understand and address health within the context of social and structural inequities. We envision a collaborative and integrative health system that supports people everywhere to live their healthiest lives in thriving communities.
