Alfredo M. Sergio, Division Counsel, focuses his practice on labor and employment matters for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, covering areas such as hiring, termination, reductions in force, discrimination, disability, accommodations, retaliation, whistleblowing, wage and hour, medical leave, restrictive covenants, conduct, discipline, drug screening, background checks, and other workplace issues. He advises VUMC on the legal implications of proposed policies and actions, employment-related contracts, and counsels VUMC as to compliance with Federal and State law and administrative regulations. Alfredo advises physician, house staff and staff administration as to employment, medical staff, house staff and governance issues. Alfredo also interacts with government agencies in connection with employment matters, and works with outside counsel to defend employment lawsuits filed against VUMC, and in other types of litigation.
Alfredo earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Temple University Beasley School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in International Relations, and is admitted to practice law in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Alfredo worked for many years at a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area law firm where he represented biopharmaceutical, life sciences, medical device, financial services, manufacturing and services companies in a variety of employment and commercial matters.
