SuperEgo Text Messaging
Development and testing of a tailored text messaging intervention to support patient adherence. Text messages are tailored based on individual psychosocial barriers to adherence.
In 2011, Vanderbilt successfully completed testing to electronically send and retrieve vaccination records from the Tennessee State Immunization Registry. Piloted initially in the Pediatric Primary Care clinic, additional clinics have been added to the process whereby all immunizations administered in those clinics and documented that day (by 10:30 pm) are sent to the state registry each evening. In 2013, information was submitted on 94,906 vaccine doses administered during 58,558 encounters with patients of all ages.
Utilization of Natural Language Processing to Detect Perioperative Events
We have partnered with the knowledgemap team to develop an approach to extracting events from free text perioperative medical records, in order to (a) re-use those events during future encounters and (b) provide quality assurance functionality.
Perioperative Predictive Modeling
The PDW is developed and maintained by The Vanderbilt Anesthesiology & Perioperative Informatics Research (VAPIR) Division, led by Jonathan P. Wanderer, MD, MPhil and Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH. We focus on utilization of information technology within the perioperative environment to improve patient safety and the quality of care delivered. The multidisciplinary group, which has grown from just three full-time research support staff in 2010 to eight in 2015, manages more than 80 active clinical research projects and has taken the lead on developing methodologies for evaluating the impact of technology and information management systems within the operating room. We currently have detailed information on over 900,000 anesthetics and support a variety of critical hospital functions.
Impact of Mobile Technologies on Perioperative Processes and Patient Outcomes
We are in the process of evaluating the impact of the use of mobile technologies on a variety of perioperative processes, including patient outcomes, provider workflow, and operational efficiency measures.
Impact of Real-Time Perioperative Clinical Decision Support
We are engaged in understanding the impact of a number of clinical decision support projects on perioperative outcomes and operational efficiency. These include experimenting with various notification modalities, information delivery systems, and approaches to obtaining outcomes of interest.
AHRQ has published a Comparative Effectiveness Research Summary Guide to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with oral medications. This project will adapt this Summary Guide to be concise, targeted, and easily actionable, and it will disseminate it to patients and healthcare providers through a patient portal and electronic health record system, respectively. The investigators will use qualitative and quantitative methodologies to evaluate understanding and application of the adaptation.

This project builds, distributes and maintains a problem oriented concept-based terminology that is a SNOMED subset to support operational needs for standardized, structured clinical problem representations.

Physician/Practitioner Office Services
RxStar is a web-based electronic medication prescribing application that works within VUMC's electronic medical record, StarPanel. This system provides state-of-the-art integration of prescribing into the workflow of all provider types and supports a comprehensive set of decision-support alerts, reminders, and suggestions.
Right Drug First Time
Right Drug First Time (RDFT) is an initiative to achieve excellence in medication prescribing through advanced prescribing clinical decision support on an enterprise scale. The RDFT service will be architected as a representational state transfer web service. It will deliver clinical decision support in a variety of clinical categories that client systems can then appropriately render and integrate into workflow. VUMC's electronic prescribing system, RxStar, will be the first clinical system to subscribe to RDFT.
Diagnostic Management Team
The Diagnostic Management Team (DMT) is a VUMC innovation program to improve the quality, cost, and interpretive services related to coordinated diagnostic testing. The DMT implementation team consists of key institutional leaders in diagnostic services, operations, and informatics.

The goal of the Vanderbilt Oncology Information System (VOIS) program is to support the continuum of cancer care. Key projects for the VOIS program include the development of a chemotherapy order management system application to support cooperative work and longitudinal plan management.
The Outpatient Whiteboard (OPWB) application is a clinical workflow tool designed to facilitate communication among all members of the healthcare team - front desk, nurses, providers, and supporting personnel - by displaying numerous aspects of a patient's status. In addition to information about the appointment, additional workflow-relevant items commonly displayed are the patient's location, the length of time at that location, and the status of tests to be performed, processes to be completed and/or personnel to be seen in clinic.
