Background

We are recruiting up to 150 pregnant women, both with or without a history of allergies and asthma. Participating in this study will consist of answering questionnaires/surveys and providing biospecimens such as blood, saliva, and nasal samples.

Previous studies have found that early-life environmental factors, such as pollution, viruses, and bacteria, contribute to the development of asthma and allergies. We are doing this research because there continues to be a strong need to understand the role of environmental factors on children’s respiratory health, including the causes of asthma and allergies.

  • Asthma and allergy high-risk group:

    1. History of or concurrent asthma or allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in either biologic parent or sibling (at least one shared biological parent) by parental report. The presence of paternal or sibling allergy or asthma will be ascertained by maternal report.
    2. Maternal age ≥ 18 years at the time of study enrollment.
    3. VUMC obstetrical practice with plan to deliver at Vanderbilt University Hospital

Comparator Study Group (low risk of asthma or allergies):

    1. No history of or concurrent asthma or allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in either biologic parent or sibling (at least one shared biological parent) by parental report. The presence of paternal or sibling allergy or asthma will be ascertained by maternal report.
    2. Maternal age ≥ 18 years at the time of study enrollment.
    3. VUMC obstetrical practice with plan to deliver at Vanderbilt University Hospital
  • Study activities will be conducted over the phone, through email, and/or around scheduled prenatal and pediatrician visits at Vanderbilt University Medical Center locations. Participants will be compensated for their time.
